Project Description

“Founded in 500 AD by the Welsh monk Illtud, the Church of Llantwit Major (Llanilltud Fawr) is believed to be Britain’s earliest centre of learning.” (St Illtud’s Church Website)

Client: Forme Glass

Architect: Davies Sutton Architects

Main Contractor: Knox & Wells Ltd

Role: Design, Survey and Installation of screens and frameless glass doors

This was a really exciting project to be part of. An ancient seat of learning, in a state of decay, re-imagined by Davies Sutton Architects and transformed into a modern education centre and gallery for the Celtic Christian Stones.

Rather than entirely rebuilding the derelict window openings, the design capped off the broken stonework with new sandstone, giving a clean and crisp look to the openings, yet keeping the sense of the history and age of the structure.

We were involved with the frameless windows and also two sets of frameless, glass double-doors. Minimalism was a key point of this project, allowing the buildings original structure to remain the key focal point.
