Our client asked for and got, a clear but protected view, using a simple structural base rail and toughened and ‘SentryGlas’ laminated balustrade panels.
The frameless, structural glass balustrade is a great option for rooms with a view .

The client contacted us to take care of the glass balustrade for his bespoke staircase. After our initial meeting, we priced up the project and following the order returned to fit all the stainless steel button fixings to the treads and template the balustrade panels.
Once the balustrade panels were templated, we transferred these shapes to a CAD package (Computer Aided Design) and sent them for manufacture. This method allows for all the quirks that can come up on a staircase like this to be ironed out in the templating and all the panels to be physically viewed in place and agreed. It can save a lot of headaches!
Once the glass was in, we fitted it all and attached the stainless steel handrail brackets, prepared for Robin Milne (a very talented furniture maker and joiner), to fit the European Oak handrail.
We think it all looks pretty good!

]]>The project brief was to design a bespoke structural glass floor, integrating a structural glass beam, to site into and existing opening in the floor area, which at the time was protected by a balustrade.
The client wanted to open up the floor area of the room – to make it a more functional space – while still allowing light to flood through to the ground floor.
Having run through various ideas with the client on site and measured up the opening, we proceeded to produce initial drawings for the conservation officer’s approval. As the building was of historical significance, the glass beam was an important element, which minimised the visual impact of the structure when viewed from the outside.
We used Low-Iron glass on the project, which had less of a green ‘tint’ due to the lower iron content. This is a good idea when you have multiple panels of glass laminated together, as the green tint can build up.
Having agreed the design, we drew up the final construction and manufacturing drawings and proceeded to procurement.
The installation was carried out by the ever capable Steve Ellis and team.
We finished the glass edge off with a rather neat stainless steel trim, which looks the business!

A very beautiful part of the world and a pleasure to visit the client to take a few pictures.

The client specified a Vitral, A74 rooflight system and asked us if we were able to take on the installation. Having spoken to Vitral, we travelled to their head office to complete the required training courses.
Following this process, we surveyed the site and produced the construction drawings for the rooflight and the bespoke aluminium flashings.
On the installation, the rooflight went in like a dream and the final look is fantastic.
One of the great advantages of the Vitral system, is the fact the units are factory sealed, giving fantastic U-Values. The system is also fully CE marked in accordance with BS/EN14351-1 and tested to EN12101-2 for full life safety smoke evacuation and in accordance with CWCT TN66/67 impact testing.

The brief was to provide a minimally framed system, that would have no visible support structure at the ridge, giving a clear ‘slice’ out of the roof line and flooding the internal space with light.
Having discussed and drawn up the design principal, we surveyed the site and then once manufacture was complete, returned and installed the frame and the structural glass elements.
The final design allows for a view straight through the roof to the sky beyond, whether from inside, or outside the building.

]]>Having surveyed the balcony, we discussed the design on site and agreed a finished size for the stainless steel frame, allowing the client to pre-prepare an opening for the glass to sit into.
The glass floor has a black, ceramic painted border to the underside, masking the frame and gaskets below and giving a clean finish. The surface is treated with a carborundum frit pattern (D5mm dots), giving a slip-resistant finish, but still allowing for great visibility and light transmittance through the glass.

]]>We decided to design a bespoke solution, as the client was keen to avoid glass clamps on the posts and we came up with a simple slotted fixing method for the glass balustrade, allowing for the least visual interference.

The glass ended up at 4.2m long, which is by far the largest single balcony we have achieved and we think makes a fantastic design impact, while keeping the impact on the client’s view to an absolute minimum.
All the fittings are 316 stainless steel (marine grade), with the structural support buried within the clients stonework.
A very satisfying job!
